Does NAEP Predict Student Postsecondary Preparedness?

Sat, April 23, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, Floor: North Building, Lobby Level, Marriott Grand Ballroom 6

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium explores to what extent the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores and survey measures are predictive of students’ preparedness for college. NAEP provides key information on student performance in academic subjects at regular intervals, allowing for comparisons between states as well as the monitoring of trends over time. Because of NAEP’s cross-sectional design, what is less known is the extent to which the assessment measures can be used to predict future success in college. This symposium takes up this question by examining the predictive validity of NAEP academic performance and survey measures through analysis of indirect as well as direct measures of college postsecondary outcomes.
