Session Type: Symposium
As metropolitan regions across the country grapple with the political economy of, and human need for housing (Pattillo, 2013), and related housing justice mobilizing, there is a need to interrogate what this means for schools, teaching and learning, and families. Drawing on critical theories, this session seeks to illuminate how housing intersects with education in the experiences of families, educators, and youth. Moreover, how families, educators, tenant organizers and policymakers advocate for new possibilities. We argue that education scholarship can benefit from a deeper engagement with housing, or the housing-school nexus. Particularly, as it relates to exclusionary school discipline and special education practices; tenant right organizing; and critical professional development for social justice educators and their efforts towards systems change.
