Session Type: Symposium
This interactive symposium will engage attendees in a critical conversation about doing ‘dangerous research’ in higher education and student affairs contexts. Many scholars who seek to push boundaries and remove barriers toward more equitable and just outcomes for criminalized/stigmatized students and political issues find there are significant challenges and barriers to that work. To be clear, the individuals and issues at the core of our inquiry and work are not what is dangerous, rather dangerous research in this context means a work of consequence as we invoke Danticat’s (2010) Create Dangerously: The Immigrant Artist at Work. Central topics include Students and Sex Work, Students and HIV/AIDS, Gang-Involved Students, Sexual Violence/Title IX, and Incarcerated Students.
Vicarious Violence: Hurdles and Hinderances to Research on College Student Sex Workers and Erotic Laborers - Terah J. Stewart, Iowa State University
