Youth Participatory Action Research on the Next Level: New Complications in an Evolving Field

Abstract
Much of the literature discussing school or classroom-based Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) offers descriptive case studies of classroom projects or analysis of student learning outcomes. Questions remain, however, related to issues of sustainability and impact for school-based YPAR. This symposium shares studies based on more than three years of research practice partnerships between three universities and two school districts, where students and teachers are implementing YPAR at an increasingly sophisticated level. Their questions, tensions, and complications have moved from introductory to advanced, raising questions about sustainability, ethics, the role of research in social change, and more. In this symposium, we aim to explore some of these questions and share ideas around how YPAR researchers can support this work.
