Critical Literacy for Racial Justice: Cultivating Equity Through Intersectionality

Abstract
As institutions across the globe seek to return ‘to normal’ in the aftermath of racial reckoning brought on by the recent murder of George Floyd and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, questions have arisen regarding the degree to which critical literacy might function as a vehicle for responding to the call for racial justice in literacy (Willis et al., 2021). In this symposium, we align with AERA’s 2022 conference theme, “Cultivating Equitable Education Systems for the 21st Century,” illustrating how critical literacy can facilitate racial justice. We do so by illustrating how social constructs such as race, language, and immigration intersect to extend the potential for using critical literacy to address (trans)racialization in the literacies and Englishes of children and youth.
