Artificial Intelligence and Equity: Perspectives on Supporting Black Youth to Thrive in the Digital World

Abstract

Many supplemental educational initiatives use digital spaces for connection and support. This session examines four different digital programs designed for and with Black youth at the center: digital Black education spaces (Warren & Coles, 2020). Conceptualizing Black as the global African diaspora, the panel includes studies of: 1)Twitter lesson dissemination of an initiative supporting representation of Black youth in the AI field across four African countries; 2) Developing and deploying an AI chatbot in a Black-led U.S.-Liberia initiative; 3) African indigenous gamification of learning; 4) Digital discussions among youth in the U.S. and South Africa focused on land justice. Presenters consider how learning, community building, and a sense of belonging are mediated through, or blocked by, digital technologies.
