Difficulty retaining effective STEM teachers has been the national trend and primary cause of STEM teacher shortages, leading to concern for students’ future access to growing STEM job demand and for America’s global competitiveness. Notwithstanding, the role of teacher preparation programs in retention is not clearly defined and practices associated with retention are understudied and underutilized. Noyce research discussed in this symposium includes: results of a national social network analysis to investigate early career teachers’ personal networks, self-efficacy, and retention; a job embeddedness investigation into factors influencing science teacher retention in four states; a collaboration of eight programs to explore employment in retention patterns in one state; and a multi-site study to examine the influences of STEM teacher leadership development.
