Cultivating Equitable Education Systems: Reaffirming the Roles of Indigenous Politics, Pedagogy, and Praxis

Tue, April 26, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, SIG-Indigenous Peoples of the Pacific Virtual Paper Session Room

Session Type: Paper Session

Abstract

The Coolangatta Statement (1999) declares that “Indigenous peoples throughout the world have argued that they have been denied equity in non-Indigenous education systems which has failed to provide educational services that nurture the whole Indigenous person inclusive of scholarship, culture, and spirituality.” The papers in this session examine Indigenous politics, pedagogy, and praxis. They argue that Indigenous sovereignty (particularly the right to self-determine in all matters) is key to ensuring the health and wellbeing of Indigenous peoples.
