20 Years of Activity Theory in Teacher Education Research: Major Contributions and Future Perspectives

Abstract

In 1999, Pamela Grossman, Peter Smagorinsky and Sheila Valencia delineated an Activity Theory framework for the study of beginning teachers' development. Their seminal proposal spurred the growth of a body of research that has illuminated the challenges and possibilities of pre- and in-service teacher education in supporting and sustaining ambitious and equitable teaching. This session both reviews these contributions and explores new conceptual and methodological approaches to the use of Activity Theory in teacher education. research and practice.
