Session Type: Invited Speaker Session
Across all sectors of settler colonial schooling, Indigenous Peoples continuously reckon with the relevance of equity discourse in sovereignty efforts. The #LandBack movement, discovery of unmarked gravesites at residential schools in the U.S. and Canada, respectful return of ancestors by universities, uncritical uptake of land acknowledgements by institutions, and public critique of land-grant institutions in the expropriation of Indigenous lands have all opened conversations regarding living in right relations with Indigenous lands, waters, and Peoples. This session will bring into conversation leaders from the local Kumeyaay Nation – those Indigenous to San Diego – and scholars to discuss the complexity of these efforts and movements in relation to Indigenous education and tribal sovereignty and cultivating equitable education systems for the future.
