Abstract

Using data from a previously conducted study that examined whiteness in early childhood, we explore how three young white children learned to conflate “love” with justice through the lens of their religious upbringing in a white Evangelical church. We then theorize the evolutionary connections between this study’s findings and the religious ideologies that potentially shape the curriculum and pedagogy of teachers who identify themselves as white Evangelical Christians - over one-third of the teaching force in the United States. Finally, we suggest how learning from Black theologies could expand notions of love and justice to encompass curriculum and pedagogy rooted in agency, social justice, and explicit attention to systematic oppression.
