Abstract

Preservice teachers need experiences developing culturally responsive skills (Brinegar, Harrison, & Hurd, 2018). Diller and Moule (2005) describe five culturally relevant skills teachers must possess to create responsive classrooms. Bishop and Harrison, (2021) describe specific characteristics related to leadership and organization in successful middle schools. This qualitative study used interviews of 25 staff in two equity-focused middle schools to examine leadership and organization characteristics through a culturally responsive lens. The findings suggest a connection between culturally relevant skills and specific characteristics of leadership and organization in successful middle schools. A recommendation is for preservice teachers to interview classroom teachers using these skills to advance their ability to operationalize characteristics of leadership and organization through a culturally responsive lens.
