Thu, April 13, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

Adult learning theory and critical professional development call for active, critical engagement of adult learners. Doctoral students learning to be scholarly practitioners must be engaged in active research studies to learn to apply research skills to real world problems. This self-study empowered doctoral candidates in three key forms of data collection: 1) two course-based assignments; 2) a reflective survey based on student learning; 3) a reflection on student learning in the self-study. Results indicate positive impacts in addressing real-life problems and in connecting students to cohort members. This study relates to the AERA 2023 theme because students engaged in critical self-reflection, seeking truth and collaborating in dialogical research and feedback to grow in their development as activist-focused scholarly practitioners.
