Understanding Oaxaqueño Student Experiences as Indigenous Experiences

Abstract

This paper seeks to answer the question, how do we identify different colonial formations to explain the experience of Oaxaqueño students in settler-colonial education in the United States? Oaxaqueño people are Indigenous to Oaxaca, Mexico and many have immigrated to the United States, specifically California. Oaxaqueño students' experiences are distinct from Latinx or immigrant experiences because of indigeneity. This paper utilizes the theories of Critical Latinx Indigeneities, Settler Colonialism, and Decolonization to identify the colonial formations that affect Oaxaqueño students across borders. Additionally, using these theories helps us recognize that Oaxaqueño struggles are Indigenous struggles and this recognition can help us move toward Indigenous solidarity and decolonial future-making.
