Abstract

In this paper, we discuss qualitative findings on the need to create policy that addresses three key areas of social-emotional competencies (SEC): 1. Developmentally and culturally appropriate language for SEC benchmarks and goals; 2. Evidence-based SEC programs and assessments connected to research-based practices; 3. Quality training and implementation for parents, practitioners, and pre-service teachers. We emphasize the importance of providing guidance for educators to assist in early identification and intervention. We provide an overview of current legislation addressing social-emotional development and point out the need for a continuum of support for students to better include all students within the least restrictive environment. A discussion on why this research and policy are necessary and a description of needed collaboration are provided.
