Encouraged by the annual theme to question traditional methods and recommend alternatives, this study rethinks concept maps as a multilayered tool, enabling science students to position themselves and their thinking in the light of language, culture, and knowledge-building. Autonomy codes from Legitimation Code Theory (LCT) are applied to clarify aspects of the content that was taught and the purpose or value for students to learn that content. A translation device functions as a rubric to analyze concept maps from an asset-based perspective, rather than using a poor, better, or best hierarchy. Initial findings showed that students make some language choices and sometimes use personal examples to position themselves as competent knowers during scientific meaning making.
