Eliciting Bilingual Children's Voices About Diversity Through Art-Based Critical Literacy: A Qualitative Case Study

Sun, April 16, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the pedagogical potential of art-based, early critical literacy as a space in which young bilingual children can explore the issues of human diversity and uniqueness. Adopting a qualitative case study approach, this study focused on 12 five-year-old children of Mexican- origin at a charter school located in Texas. As part of a larger longitudinal study, the data were collected for five months through multiple methods including video/audio recordings, participant observation, and interviews. The findings provide important points for the possibility of connecting multicultural books, art activities, and early critical literacy together so that young bilingual children may gain a deeper understanding of diversity and build positive personal identities.
