Satellite Sites at Historically White Institutions: Progress Toward Racial Equity or More of the Same?

Abstract

In growing frequency, Historically White Institutions are opening satellite locations to enhance racial+ equity and access, yet little research has evaluated their effectiveness. Following a critical race theory framework, we conducted a participatory, Interpretive Description study and interviewed Black graduate students (n=18) across a multi-site university that hosts a suburban, White student majority main location and an urban, Black student majority satellite location. We completed a team thematic analysis and developed five themes: experiences of inclusion, Black students as generous unpaid administrators, Black students as generous unpaid educators, catering to Whiteness, and the permanence of racism. Our research indicates a need for additional planning for satellite sites and to reform antiquated policies/practices that serve the already privileged.
