Sat, April 15, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

Teaching and teacher education are often predicated on the wholesale transmission of knowledge from teacher educator to teacher to student, without taking into account the agential power of human and non-human bodies. Similarly, while much has been written about how educational policies, pedagogies, and standardized testing privilege and reproduce whiteness, there has not been much discussion about how the entanglement of whiteness (defined here as an assemblage of processes, practices, structures, and emotions) with teacher and student agency in schools. This presentation focuses on the ways in which whiteness changes the capacities of teacher practices that are intended to further social justice.
