Development and Validation of the Pair-Programming Mutual Engagement Questionnaire (PPME-Q) for K–12 Teaching Contexts (Poster 26)

Abstract

There is an increasing emphasis on teaching computational thinking to young learners through learning to code. Pair-Programming (PP) has become the most prevalent collaborative learning strategy. Mutual engagement plays an essential role in PP activities. Yet few ways to measure mutual engagement and PP are available. A six-point Likert scale consisting of 20 items was developed to bridge this gap. We performed validity and reliability tests of the scale with a sample of 86 8th-grade students. Confirmatory factor analysis validated a four-factor construct of the scale: behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and social engagement. This scale showed valid and reliable scores and, thus, is an effective tool to assess students’ mutual engagement in PP. Implications for teaching practice are also discussed.
