Prior Knowledge, Technical, and Nontechnical Skills in Trauma Simulation Performance

Abstract

In the United States, about 150,000 people die each year due to traumatic accidents. Non-technical skills are important in successful patient outcomes. This study addressed the question: Does prior medical knowledge of trauma team members correlate with performance in a trauma resuscitation simulation? Data were collected for 24 trauma teams, with four members each, participating in simulated trauma resuscitations. There were no significant relationships between non-technical skill performance and prior knowledge or non-technical performance and technical skill performance. There was a significant positive relationship between the prior medical knowledge of the trauma surgery resident and technical skill performance. Differences in baseline prior knowledge among trauma team members may impact the technical skills of the team, and in turn patient care.
