Communication in 21st century civic, public, and private worlds is largely digital and often multimodal. The rapid introduction of technology into classroom spaces has provided opportunities for students to integrate multiple modes into a single act of composing, yet there is little specific knowledge to guide multimodal learning into classroom experiences. This study used a multiliteracies design framework to analyze the screen-recorded composing activity of 5th-grade students as they created digital and multimodal compositions. Analysis distilled eleven process activities in which students engaged. Findings have the opportunity to specify vague "complexities" mentioned in literature and provide a metalanguage with which teachers and researchers can continue to use to impact students learning experiences.
