This study focuses on implementing critical literacy in an out-of-school project through disrupting the commonplace, interrogating multiple viewpoints focusing on sociopolitical issues, and taking action and promoting social justice (Lewinson et al, 2002). The main objectives are to provide Diverse Young Readers (DYR) opportunities to express their consciousness through critical readings and to sustain students’ cultural identities as they raise their voices through textual responses. Also, the study seeks to explore readers' meaning-making through reading and reflecting on social justice issues. Data were triangulated, including participant observation, field notes, pre-post interviews, artifacts, reflection, and recordings of book discussions. Data analysis was based on thematic analysis using critical discourse (Fairclough, 1992)that will be invaluable for enriching critical literacy practices out school.
