How the Specter of Overtesting in Teacher Education Affects All Preservice Teachers

Abstract

This research uses a case study design to consider these questions:
°How does standardized testing affect the experiences of preservice teachers who are first generation White students, and students of color? What is the role of the institution related to these preservice teachers’ experiences?
Findings indicated that preservice teachers used a complex dialogic process to make sense of their often challenging experiences with testing. The findings also indicated that while the institution tried to be responsive by eventually providing funding for tests, deeper and more transformative change is needed to support first generation students and students of color.
