This paper explores the politics of receiving newly arrived migrant pupils through competing approaches in the Danish welfare state school from the early 1970s and up until the mid-1990s. Source material consist of parliamentary debates combined with the professional- and research literature concerning migrant pupils that developed in the period. The paper investigates the relation between knowledge circulation and policy about reception approaches. Consequently, the paper explores how educational knowledge on reception approaches was circulated between different streams of politics and knowledge (Béland, 2005; Östling et al., 2020; Teodorovic, 2008). We illustrate how knowledge and politics interact to make or reject policy, illuminating how policy on approaches to schooling of newly arrived migrant pupils evolved in the Danish welfare state.
