Abstract

An increasing number of learners worldwide follows (part of their) secondary education in a second language. The types of secondary education that offer education in a second language assume an important role for subject teachers to offer language support. In this presentation, language support is conceptualized as language scaffolds.
This presentation contains an overview of the preliminary results of a study on the types of language scaffolds that teachers teaching in Dutch secondary international transition class settings use in their teaching and the reasons they have for employing these scaffolds. The results show that supports are geared towards vocabulary, sentence and text levels, assist both productive and receptive skills and focus on content and language as well as disciplinary literacy.
