Abstract

Assignments, the learning activities that students are asked to complete, represent one of the most heavily used features of any learning management system (LMS). An assignment in the LMS could instruct a student to submit a practice quiz, watch a video, fill out a worksheet, reflect on their personal goals, and more. How such activities are selected and implemented in formal education settings is an urgent education research priority, and a principal target when providing guidance for instructional practice and education reform. In this paper, we make the case for conducting research by experimentally manipulating LMS assignments, and we describe an emerging LMS plugin that automates a complete, rigorous, and responsible experimental research workflow.
