The House Is on Fire: Converging Pandemics, Resistance, and the (Re)Imagining of Education

Abstract

The COVID-19 crisis continues to impact everyone across the globe. Moreover, we are reminded of the violence against BIPoC by the state in the form of the aid delivered to help alleviate the stress caused by this pandemic, but also the concurrent violence enacted in the name of law and order. Using our qualitative study on the impact of COVID-19 on PreK-12 and higher education leaders, we interrogate white settler colonialism in education by conceptualizing carnival as portal while embracing critical hope for (re)imagined futures. Using science fiction to harness the engagement of resistant (re)visioning that can and needs to take place, takes its lead from the leaders who aim to imagine what could be during this time.
