Using a Design-Based Research Approach to Foster State-Family Partnerships in Early Care and Education: A Case Study

Thu, April 13, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

Family engagement efforts at the state level in early care and education are limited. Moreover, methodology approaches usually lack family voice. Using a design-based research (DBR) approach, this project aimed to place a group of families as equal partners in the development of state-wide early learning policies and practices. Families had six weekly design meetings and discussed their experiences with early childhood education (ECE) programs and possible solutions. The results from qualitative data analysis suggest that families were satisfied with the quality of their ECE programs, but also had considerable concerns. Families also put together recommendations for the state, such as behavior support policy recommendations and a “do’s and don’ts” handout for teachers. Implications for future DBR work are discussed.
