Abstract

Despite decades of research on the gender and racial/ethnic equity gaps in the field of computing, there remains a dearth of literature on the experiences of undergraduates who participate in computing internships. Given that high-impact practices such as internships are an important factor in promoting major and career persistence, we must consider that internships may be one way to promote broader participation in computing. This study examines the characteristics of students in non-computing majors who participate in computing internships to understand the nature of these experiences (and gender and racial/ethnic differences), and how internships predict students’ plans to pursue a computing career.
