Abstract

The Norwegian National Curriculum was renewed in 2020, to meet constantly changes and challenges in society. The research question illuminating this study is: What are teachers’ perceptions of using professional judgement in working with the interdisciplinary topic democracy and citizenship? The data set underpinning the argument in the study is focus group discussions with 48 teachers from 32 schools. Inductive content analysis was conducted, and four findings are interesting: 1) The use of a cultural approach when teaching democracy and citizenship. 2) An unawareness of the impact of professional judgement in teaching. 3) Being uncritical of learning materials when teaching democracy and citizenship. 4) Little time spent on implementing the new curriculum.
