Mentoring Styles and Mentees' Roles: Matchups That Support Student-Teachers' Professional Agency for Learning

Sun, April 16, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

Teacher mentoring is often expected to encourage professional learning. Teacher professional learning and teacher professional agency are closely related concepts. However, the role of agency within mentoring relationships is typically complex. Specifically, scholars disagree on whether student-teachers can enact agency and influence their senior mentor-teachers’ learning. This study claims that analyzing the interrelationship between mentor-teachers’ mentoring styles and the roles that student-teachers undertake in these relationships sheds light on this issue. It may explain why in some cases student-teachers manage to enact professional agency while in other cases they feel powerless to do so.
