Abstract

This study aims to uncover theoretical foundations of school leaders’ ethical decision making. A construct co-occurrence network was used as a proxy for the theoretical foundation, which was shaped by 95 constructs and 369 construct co-occurrence ties in 71 articles on school leaders’ ethical decision making in eight countries. Ethical principles (e.g., the ethics of care, justice, and critique) and values were at the center of the theoretical foundation. The theoretical foundation emerged in the 1970s, and the fastest growth was seen in the 2000s. The results suggest theoretical deficiencies in at least three areas.
