Design Case Utilizing a Funds of Knowledge Framework for a Gallery Walk

Abstract

This design case discusses utilizing a gallery walk during a reading experience in a first semester writing course at a Northern New Mexico branch campus of the University of New Mexico. This activity helped launch the theme of significant places in our lives that we completed during the writing of the first essay of the course. Students read We Are Water Protectors (Lindstrom & Goade, 2020) and made connections to their life experiences as part of their writing process. I was inspired to use a gallery walk because of the connection to the cultures of this location and the value we place on powerfully written and illustrated text.
