Abstract

Thousands of colleges and universities exist in rural contexts across the United States, yet we know little about the work and career development of faculty at such institutions. Through integrative literature review methods, this article demonstrates how faculty at rural colleges and universities encounter specific factors to their professorial development because of the rural contexts in which their home institutions reside. In order to more thoroughly understand the development of rural college-based faculty members, future research ideas and questions around such factors are provided. This article also includes policy and practice recommendations, such as offering more professional development opportunities for rural faculty and recruitment and retention efforts for minoritized scholars, particularly women faculty and faculty of color.
