Creating Impactful Online Doctoral Mentorship Approaches

Abstract

Due to the continual growth of online education, faculty need to develop mentorship approaches that are conducive to guiding student research in virtual settings. Faculty to mentee relationships can significantly impact student retention and success in doctoral programs. To better understand this phenomenon, this study examined participants’ experiences of completing dissertation research through virtual mentorship approaches. The findings revealed the majority of participants were satisfied with their doctoral experiences and in dissertation completion processes. Participant concerns stemmed from challenges that were associated with juggling multiple personal, professional, and academic responsibilities; feelings of lower writing self-efficacy; and the complexities of the dissertation process. Our findings provide further support on the importance of positive online mentorship experiences for dissertation completion.
