Valuing Creativity in an Educational Environment: The Importance of Need Satisfaction (Poster 46)

Abstract

Self-determination theory examines how personal and socio-cultural factors affect an individuals’ growth. When basic psychological needs (i.e., autonomy, competence, and relatedness) are satisfied, intrinsic motivation emerges and people’s creativity is expressed. In the sample of 360 university students, the objective of the present study was to investigate how need satisfaction in an educational context is translated into two motivational constructs and creative performance in four verbal creativity tasks. The SEM showed that the effect of need satisfaction on creative performance was completely mediated by intrinsic motivation and the perceived value of creativity. However, the perceived value of creativity only partially mediated the effect of intrinsic motivation, indicating the importance of both motivational constructs in the context of creative performance.
