Understanding the Lived Experiences of Somali Family Childcare Providers: A Community Cultural Wealth Approach

Abstract

The goal of this study was to understand the strengths, values, and goals of Somali family child care providers living in a multi-ethnic, urban community. Two focus groups were conducted as part of ongoing project designed to support providers to sustain and grow their business while honoring the community context. The first focus group aimed to learn about providers’ experience with the project, and the second sought to examine cultural values and practices enacted in their FCC homes and identify approaches to teaching and caring for young children. Yosso’s theory of community cultural wealth (Yosso, 2005) is used to identify the knowledges, skills, abilities, and networks providers use to survive and resist racism and other forms of oppression.
