Career and Technical Education Teachers' Trust and Their Basic Psychological Needs: A Two-Wave Cross-Lagged Study

Abstract

Grounded in Self-determination theory, this study examines the longitudinal links between teachers’ trust in colleagues and the satisfaction and frustration of their basic psychological needs (BPNs; relatedness, competence, and autonomy). The study was conducted among 666 career and technical education teachers (CTE) in Quebec, Canada. Results of the structural equation modeling analyses reveal that: trust in colleagues (T1) positively predicts the satisfaction of the three BPNs (T2); and trust in colleagues (T1) negatively predicts the frustration of the three BPNs (T2). The results of the study contribute to a better understanding of the prominent role of trust in colleagues in teacher motivation from a longitudinal perspective. The theoretical and practical implications of this study will be addressed throughout the presentation.
