Abstract

Research findings from hundreds of studies of SEL programs involving students around the world confirm that integrating social and emotional learning (SEL) into the structures and practices of schools is a path to creating safe, supportive environments to foster positive cognitive, emotional, and behavioral skills. There is limited evidence, however, on steps teacher preparation programs and districts have taken to empower teachers with skillsets to implement SEL and overcome potential barriers. Researchers developed an instrument to measure PK-12 teachers’ perceptions, knowledge, training, and experiences fostering students’ SEL in their classrooms. A pilot study was conducted with 34 participants and an expert focus group to assess content and face validity of the instrument prior to large-scale implementation.
