Abstract

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) programs are vastly different among postsecondary institutions. The qualifying exam (QE) is a central component of most Ed.D. programs. Despite the QE being common in doctoral programs, the nature of the exam and preparation process vary significantly (Manus et al., 1992; Taylor, 2007). A comparison of Ed.D. programs can provide clarity on the various Ed.D. approaches being employed and assist future programmatic evaluation to meet diverse student needs among changing trends in postsecondary educational environments (Fisher et al., 2020; McMahon et al., 2020; Schafer & Giblin, 2008). This study systematically compares different QE approaches such as the exam’s models, rubric, rating process, and accommodation. The results will benefit the Ed.D. program development and relevant future studies.
