Abstract

Narrative inquiry was used to explore the influence lesson study had on cultural scripts held by eight secondary preservice mathematics teachers regarding the teaching of mathematics. Cultural scripts provide insight into beliefs and influence behavior and actions in the classroom. Data was collected through interviews, written reflective prompts, and a final paper. Analysis of the data consisted of finding codes and themes. While some preservice teachers demonstrated a beginning change in their cultural scripts, not all exhibited such growth. Results indicate extended time is needed to influence cultural scripts regarding the teaching of mathematics, providing implications for the preparation of future teachers. The research and results can be used to inspire and challenge thinking about how to prepare future teachers.
