Noticing Truths With Early Childhood Lessons in a Native American Arts Curriculum Initiative

Abstract

Early childhood curriculum in our State in the West of the USA includes the arts and learning about local Native peoples. This project considers truths evoked and education that matters in ECE from culturally responsive lessons that integrate Native arts. Local tribes were included as knowledge keepers and as the primary source of Native knowledge as they were asked, ‘What would you like children in this state to know about your tribe?’. As lessons were observed in ECE classrooms we noticed and recorded reflections on practice. Verbal, written, and artistic engagements, including a weaving, consider truths that emerged through affect to learn more about how we can support ECE teachers to incorporate arts with authentic Native American perspectives.
