Abstract

To realize the potential of a diverse biomedical workforce, future scientists need to 1) successfully navigate their doctoral training, 2) make informed choices regarding their pursuit of postdoctoral employment, and 3) then attain positions that either embody or facilitate access to their desired careers. This study utilizes a national, longitudinal data set to assess the doctoral training experiences that predict career outcomes. While specific aspects of experience may differ inequitably across demographic groups, findings suggest that these influences on early career attainment of employment are neither amplified nor mitigated by demographic factors. Accordingly, effective practices to enhance sense of belonging, peer interactions, scholarly engagement, and perceived mentorship quality early in the graduate career can have lasting impacts for all students.
