Fri, April 14, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

A systematic literature review was conducted as part of an NSF-funded project to examine prior studies on computing education that researched the gaps existing between industry requirements of computing professionals and what students learned from academic training. We looked at the competencies (knowledge, skills, and dispositions) that computing professionals require on the job and recommendations from the authors of reviewed studies for improving teaching and learning of these competencies. Our search began with 4949 articles from 4 databases, which were reduced to 52 articles matching our search criteria. This paper describes the SLR process and how we addressed some practical problems, and reports the preliminary results on the educational recommendations that were provided in prior studies to improve computing education.
