A three-year study of 41 economically disadvantaged, ethnically diverse talented and high achieving students in the poor urban high school in Malaysia was conducted to explore resilience skills in two-phases: one when the students were in Form Three (aged 15) and the other were in Form Five (aged 17). Mix- method of approach was used to collect data using survey, interviews, and school records. Quantitative data was analyzed descriptively and qualitative data was transcribed to find themes The results suggested that some protective factors help students developed their resilience skills; supportive parents and families, teachers, group of high achievers, strong personality and belief in self, and ways to cope with negative aspects of school and urban environment.
