Abstract

Acknowledging the prevalence of mental health concerns and service utilization along with the impact from the COVID-19 pandemic, a cultural shift led by the educational system has become imminent. This mixed methods study explored the qualities of system leadership that impact the planning and interventions in response to students’ mental health needs.

Study findings include: superintendents (60%) reported students’ utilizing counseling services. Approximately 28% of doctoral students (n = 5,568, p < .05), utilized counseling and/or prescription medication intervention. Mental health concerns and students' sense of belonging/connectedness to the educational system showed a significant relationship. The findings support the current call to action. Educational system leaders have a role in mitigating students’ mental health concerns to support their academic experiences.
