Future Forming Research: Lessons Learned From Academic Advising Literature

Abstract

Research on higher education practices can inform policy decisions and program enhancement. However, there are persistent challenges in integrating research efforts in meaningful ways throughout higher education practices. In this study, we highlighted dilemmas scholars may face when they conduct research to examine the effectiveness and impact of higher education practices. Centering on academic advising practices in U.S. higher education settings, we examined recently published research studies to summarize key research design elements and propose considerations to enhance research-practice integration. Based on the review of academic advising research and practices, we highlight promising future-forming research efforts in higher education.
