Transnational Social Fields and the Exportation of Employability Through Transnational Education

• In Event: The Role of Employment in Postsecondary Outcomes

Abstract

Transnational education gained significance during the pandemic as place-based international education reduced the need for travel. However, transnational education institutions exporting foreign curricula often market the employability advantages to locally situated prospective students without evidence of their claims. This qualitative study draws on interviews with 19 recent alumni from a German transnational education institution in Turkey; nearly all graduates used their transnational education to find work locally. In representing the alumni transitions, this study sheds light on how transnational education institutions can provide graduates with a locally situated yet global education that leads to home-country labor market outcomes. It offers concrete evidence to support an alternative perspective on the impact and sustainability of transnational education.
