Abstract

First-year early childhood teachers face a range of challenges in learning how to teach in elementary school contexts. A primary concern is learning how to manage their conceptions of engaging in developmentally appropriate practices while addressing the expectations of families, school administrators, and policymakers. In this paper, we investigate this issue by examining how the teachers in our longitudinal case study described: a) their conceptions of developmentally appropriate practices and b) their engagement in such practices during their first year of teaching. Examining their experiences illuminates: a) the spaces that might exist for teachers to think about and engage in appropriate practices, and b) how teacher educators can better support novice teachers in conceptualizing and implementing more equitable practices.
